The Shortfall Of Using Platforms Like Fiverr & Upwork

Have you ever wondered if these modern platforms like Fiverr and Upwork fit the brief and provide a good service for both sides of the equation? We decided to try them out so you don’t have to. Have a read of our findings below.

Using These Platforms as a Buyer

To start our experiment we decided to start using these platforms as a buyer. In this particular scenario, we thought we would look for a simple logo and website to describe our new business idea.

When using the inbuilt search tool we were inundated with offers from as little as $25 (around £17). The only problem was there were so many to choose from we didn’t know where to start. We decided to use the filtering tool and select the highest rated buyer, naturally, this was the best way of guaranteeing a good outcome. We also purchased the lowest priced services we could find to see how good the quality of work would be.

Straight away we couldn’t help but wonder, how is anyone meant to compete with these sellers with upwards of 500 reviews? And how is anyone meant to compete with these insanely low prices?

When receiving the work that we had requested from both sellers (details hidden for privacy reasons), both pieces of work were similar in quality and barely met the requirements that had been listed. 

 

Using These Platforms as a Seller

Next up, it was time to register as a seller and see if we could obtain some freelance work. The registration process was pretty straight forward for all platforms, and before we knew it we could begin making our listings and searching for work. 

In total, we made around 10 different listings, each varied in pricing and spec to maximise our chances of receiving work. Over 24 hours later and nothing had come in, so we decided to start looking at the available buyer requests to provide custom pitches. Another 24 hours passed and still, nothing had come in. 

After waiting a few days and trying the various recommended methods, we had failed to receive any work and gain a reputation on the platform. With this in mind, we decided to start running searches to see how well the competition was doing… and this is what we found. 

All platforms were saturated with listings, with everyone competing against each other resulting in extremely low prices. Instead of concentrating on the quality of work, it was all about obtaining the sale against other sellers in your industry.

 

Our Conclusion

Whilst we appreciate modern platforms such as Fiverr and Upwork have helped people obtain an income, we can’t ignore the problems behind the level of competition and work quality.
